Sarah was born 7 Aug 1823 and baptized at St. Mary Parish in Mirfield on 25 Jan 1824, dau of Joseph and Mary (Pollitt) Sykes. Sarah married William R. Sinfield on 11 Jan 1852 at Saddleworth, St. Chad, County of York, and they came to the U.S. shortly after that. William enlisted in Co. E, 72nd NY Vols on 16 May 1861. Having no children, Sarah was able to join Co. E at Staten Island, NY, and was with the regiment until William was wounded at Gettysburg, when they went to a military hospital in Rhode Island, where she continued to serve as a nurse. Sarah was awarded a pension by a Special Act of the 48th Congress on 5 Jul 1884, and died at home in Dunkirk, NY.
