Growing up near Boulder, CO, she married Dr. Cecil Swenerton in British Columbia and went into nursing. He died during the 1918 Flu Epidemic. She then graduated from Colorado University in 1919 and moved in with her sister Ellen Sanburg Sparrow in Long Beach, CA. Lillian served as a public health nurse there until she met and married Guy Cheney. They were together until he died in 1961.
