John was christened 24 Aug 1640 in Blagdon, Somersetshire, England at St. Andrew's Parish Church.
In 1676 John, a Quaker, settled in Maryland when he claimed 50 acres for transporting himself into the province. He later owned 500 acres called Pitts Vineyard on the east side of Tuckahoe Creek.
In about 1677, John married Elizabeth Blackwell at the hoe of Richard Dudley, Talbot Co., Maryland.

In John's will he requested "a decent burial in Friends Burying Place in Tuckeho Meeting House."
Inscribed on a stone in the cemetery at Third Haven Meeting House.:
"This burial ground known as Tuckahoe, belongs to Third Haven monthly meeting of Friends."
