Donald Gerald Seville
BUCYRUS - Donald Gerald Seville, 84, 1020 Hull Ave., Bucyrus, died on January 8th, 2009 at the Marion General Hospital after a short illness.
He was born at home on Aug. 23, 1924 in rural Attica, Ohio. He was the son of late Carl M. and Goldie (Carrick) Seville. On Feb. 5, 1947, Donald married Bonnie Belle (Keen) Seville, and after 56 years of marriage, she preceded him in death Dec. 28, 2003.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by sister, Velma Jean Lundell, Ashland, Ohio; a half-brother, Howard V. Seville, Attica, Ohio; two step-brothers, William G. Paull, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Richard M. (Max) Paull, Parma, Ohio.
He is survived by a son, Dennis A. & Connie Seville; a daughter, Charlene K. & George H. Albu, both of Bucyrus, Ohio; a Granddaughter, Kathlene Seville; and a Grandson, Nicholas & Becky Seville; and a great-granddaughter, Jovie Seville, all of Bucyrus; a brother, Carlton L. Seville, Sandusky, Ohio; a sister, Thelma Baker, North Fairfield, Ohio; a half-sister, Dorothy Stephens, St. Augustine, Florida; a step-sister, Mary Jo Gooding, Palm Beach, Florida; a step-brother, Walter C. Paull Jr., Akron, Ohio.
Raised on a farm near Attica, Ohio, Donald lived most of his life in Bucyrus. A farm boy who wanted to see the world, he joined the U.S. Navy in September, 1941. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during the war. He was aboard the Battleship U.S.S Idaho in Reykjavik, Iceland on Dec. 7, 1941. While aboard the Idaho, he took part in the campaign in the Aleutian Islands. He was aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Hutchins when it was heavily damaged during the battle of Okinawa. The Hutchins was returned to the United States to repair the damage and, while at the Bremerton, Washington Navy Yard, the war ended. After his discharge from the Navy, Donald worked as a long haul trucker, barn roof and house painter. He worked for a short time at Swan Rubber and the Cussins & Ferns store in Bucyrus before being hired at Galion Manufacturing. He worked in the maintenance department where part of his responsibilities was the certification of large cranes before shipment. When Galion Manufacturing became Komatsu America, Don continued working in the maintenance and electrical department, retiring after 38 years of service.
Don and Bonnie enjoyed golf and bowling. They both deeply enjoyed their family and friends and enjoyed traveling for visits. Don also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to travel and would take a trip whenever he could, visiting friends and relatives in Indiana, Tennessee, Colorado and Florida. Don particularly enjoyed auctions and collecting very old records, antique oil lamps, coins, and whatever caught his fancy.
Donald was a member of the Bucyrus American Legion and VFW Posts. He was a former member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge and a former member of the Crawford County Conservation League, where he did much work to ensure the success of the League's Bingo games.
Don had a natural talent for working on any type of machinery. If it was once running, then he could fix or repair it and make it run better. He was a self-taught electrician; roofer; mason; woodworker. There were few things that he couldn't do when he put his mind to it. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 13th at 1 P.M. at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, with the Reverend Tim Grimes officiating, burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home on Monday, January 12th where the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The American Legion Post will provide military honors. Memorials to Donald's memory can be made to the Gideon's or to any other charity of the donor's choice if they wish to do so.
