William Morgan Clevenger was born in Cocke County, Tenn. in 1876, even though 1866 is listed on his grave marker. His World War I draft registration and his death certificate (both shown in the right column) list his date of birth as April 5, 1876.

His parents were Alexander Clevenger and Sarah Bailey. His mother died while he was still a baby. Catherine Holloway assisted Alex in caring for Morgan until Alex remarried in 1891, and Eliza Jane Bridges became his stepmother. Alex died when Morgan was a teenager.

Still in his late teens, Morgan left Cocke County to serve in the Spanish-American War. When he returned, he boarded with Blackburn and Adaline Sisk and worked on their farm, where Morgan's parents were buried in the Free-Clevenger Cemetery. (The 1900 census data listed his age as 22. Blackburn and Adaline's children living at home at that time were Katie, Della, Jodie, Cam, Lee, "Baddie," James and Edom.)

Morgan married Fronia Sprouse in 1901. Soon thereafter they moved to Texas.

Based on census data, in 1910 Morgan and Fronia were living in Stephens Co., Texas with their 4-year-old daughter Bessie. A decade later, the family, still with only 1 child, was still in Stephens Co. Data are either sketchy or unavailable for the next 3 decades. They lived on and operated a farm near Eastland, Texas.

Fronia died in 1959 at age 75, a year before Morgan's death.

Morgan died at age 84 in 1960, after spending his last 6 months in a VA hospital.
