In 1908, Lewis Ames sold his farm to Alfred Bowditch, from Boston. In her book, North Haven Summers, Eleanor Motley Richardson included excerpts from Bowditch's account of the land transaction. Bowditch remembered, "I sent Nelson Mullin [the inn keeper at the Mullin House] over to see Mr Ames one morning to sound him out about selling out. Word came back that he wanted to see me; I knew what that meant and I asked Mr Mullin for the names of the abutting owners of the farm and drew up an agreement for the purchase and sale leaving the amount of the purchase money blank. Armed with this and a blank check I walked over to see Mr Ames whom I found in the sitting room. After some preliminary talk, I asked how he felt about selling out. He said he would like to do so as he was not strong enough to work the farm himself and help was hard to get. He was unwilling to sell the whole farm and move away and wanted to keep his house and two or three acres. I was as anxious to have him stay as he was to do so and I suggested that I might buy the whole and give him a life lease of his house and a few acres of land; the right to keep a cow and horse in the barn. This suited him perfectly and the agreement was signed on the spot. North Haven News, September 2009.
