Mavis Maray Jones, 88, passed away January 13, 2016 in Stillwater, Oklahoma with his family by his side. He was born on November 25, 1927 to Charlie Judson and Alice (Roles) Jones of Carter, Oklahoma. He grew up near Granite, Oklahoma and graduated from Lake Creek High School in 1945.

Mavis honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II and received the US Navy World War II Victory Medal.

He married Wilene Matheny on November 18, 1949, at a service held in Mangum, Oklahoma.

Mavis attended Oklahoma State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1960. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) for 38 years, retiring in 1986 as the State of Oklahoma’s Watershed Construction Engineer. During his SCS tenure he was named the Oklahoma Soil Conservation Engineer of the Year in 1985 by the United State Department of Agriculture. After retirement, he worked as a private consulting engineer for the Oklahoma Conservation Commission where he focused on the development of wetland habitat in Oklahoma. He was recognized with the Wetlands Pioneer Award in 1994 by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

He was preceded in passing by his parents, Charlie and Alice Jones, and sister-in-law Gloria Jones.

He is survived by his wife Wilene of the home, his sons Gary Jones (Christine Miller) of Stillwater, David (Diana) Jones of Edmond, OK, daughter Lori (Greg) Boyer of Stillwater, grandchildren Caitlin Cundiff, Austin Boyer, Alexandra, Whitney and Ryan Jones and his brothers, Rueben (Ruth) Jones of Sacramento, CA, Wayne (Sally) of Clifton, ID, Ferrill Jones of Westbrook, MN, and Carroll (Barbra) of Granite, OK.,

Services ~ Monday, January 18th, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Stillwater with Dr. Tim Walker officiating, burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
