CARL BUCHANAN, JR.

January 8, 2016, Daddy, Dad, Papa began his journey to see the Lord and be reunited with the love of his life, Martha, after a year long battle with mesothelioma. He fought this battle the way he lived his life: strong, quiet, no complaints, living each day to the fullest.
Carl was predeceased by his "childhood sweetheart" and wife of 61 years, Martha, and his dad, Carl Buchanan, Sr.; mom, Apolonia (Paulene); and brother, Sam Buchanan.
He is survived by his 5 children: Gini Buchanan, Judy Walker (Alan); Mekale Buchanan Elliott; Nick Buchanan (Dao); Mike Buchanan; grandchildren: Mandi Dickey (Darrin); Jeff La Force; Ryan Buchanan (Teryn); Austin Thomason (fiancee Kim Krueger); Shelby Buchanan; great grandchildren: Josh Dickey, Kaleb Dickey and Andrew Dickey; and numerous nieces and nephews who all loved and admired their Uncle Carl.
Carl was born in Beaumont, Texas on Jan. 25, 1929 and moved to Amarillo, Texas at an early age. He grew up there with four brothers. Surviving brothers: Jerry (Charlotte) and Bob (Lanell) of Amarillo; and Tom (Glenda) of Highland Ranch, CO. Carl attended Amarillo schools graduating from Price College in 1947. At age 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radar instructor at Pearl Harbor. He received an honorable discharge in 1950. In 1961 Carl moved his family to work in the lab of Continental Carbon Co.'s Bakersfield refinery.
Carl began his working career in 1946 at the Texaco Refinery in Amarillo, Texas and then moved on to the Canadian Gas Company of Amarillo. Those jobs led him to a 31 year career with Continental Carbon Co. in Sunray, Texas; Westlake, LA and Bakersfield, CA. He retired in 1981 as a quality control lab mgr. Carl then took a job with Gary Drilling of Bakersfield as a dispatcher in the guard shack for nine years until he decided to stay home with his loving wife, Martha.
Carl was an active member of St. Francis Church for the last 55 years. The last 8 years of which he was a member of the Rosary ministry where he made thousands of rosaries to be used in various church activities. This helped him as he greived the loss of his wife in 2008. He was also an avid leather worker receiving numerous blue ribbons for entries in the Kern County Fair. Most recently, at age 86, he received a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place for his entries! He was an avid gun collector. Carl also enjoyed cooking even creating his own recipes. One of his favorite pastimes was clipping coupons and grocery shopping. He took pride in driving a mile to save a dollar.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for everyone's support thru this difficult time. And a special thank you to Optimal Hospice nurses Marissa, Chris, and Maria who went the extra mile to keep Carl's spirits high. He made three new friends...

Recitation of the Rosary and Mass will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, with burial immediately following at Greenlawn Southwest.
