Michael Fender, son of Christian and Anna Maria Finter, was born about 1766 in North Carolina and died 15 December 1865 in Monroe County, Tennessee. He married Winnifred Holcomb about 1799 in Surry County, North Carolina. Winnie was born about 1779 in North Carolina and died 17 December 1868 in Monroe County, Tennessee. The family moved to this area of Tennessee about 1825.

This cemetery was originally a "family burial ground" located on Michael Fender's property. Many friends and neighbors of Michael and Winnifred Fender who died around the time of the Civil War are also buried in this oldest section, although their specific gravesite locations have been lost through the years.

Michael and Winnifred Fender had six children: Sarah Elizabeth "Betsey" (Stamper), Jonathan, Daniel, Christian R., Sarah (Hagewood) and John. All except John (who remained in this area) married and moved elsewhere. Jonathan moved to Kaufman County, Texas, Daniel and Christian R. moved to Missouri, and Betsey's children settled in other parts of Tennessee. Today, descendants of Michael and Winnifred are scattered virtually all over the United States.

To date, some notable descendants of Michael and Winnifred include 2nd great-grandson Kenneth M. Fender of Oregon, a naturalist for whom the "Fender's Blue Butterfly" was named, and 3rd great-grandson Lloyd Hobart Presley, who founded the first country music theater in Branson, Missouri.
