Geraldine Green was born on June 24, 1934, in Opelousas, Louisiana, to Gilbert and Aline Leger. She was called to eternal rest on July 27, 2021, at the age of 87.

Geraldine accepted the Lord at an early age. She was baptized into the Catholic faith during infancy and remained loyal until her departure. She was a member of Knights of Peter Claver, Ladies Auxiliary, for over 50 years and held the rank of 4th degree. She was a member of the Democratic Federation for Women.

Geraldine was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, the late Mr. Alton Green, on January 14, 1954, and remained married for 54 years. To this union, five children were born.

Geraldine developed a passion for serving the community of Opelousas for 30 plus years. Geraldine and Alton took a leap of faith and established a Mom and Pop grocery store in the heart of Opelousas from 1972 to 2002 called, "Green's Grocery and Meat Market".

Geraldine was very dedicated to her customers and prided herself in providing the best customer service to her community. She firmly believed in giving back by giving free groceries to those in need. Green's Grocery store was the first black-owned business to establish in-store credit to the Opelousas community.

Geraldine's vision of entrepreneurship inspired the future generation to continue providing outstanding service and growth to the city of Opelousas. Geraldine was very spiritual and a people's person who would light up a room as soon as she appeared. She was a very delightful person with a kind and selfless heart. She also spearheaded numerous fundraisers for Grambling University, Southern University and Opelousas Senior High School.

Geraldine leaves to cherish her memory, five children; James Ronald Green (Elizabeth) of Houston, Texas, Perry Lee Green (Sharon) of Houston, Texas, Evelyn Ann Green of Opelousas, Louisiana, Lisa Green of San Antonio, Texas, and Chereva Celestine (Johnny) of Opelousas, Louisiana; a brother, Willie Paul Green; 12 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Aline Leger; her husband, Alton Green and her sister, Evelyn Leger and Brenda Seniguar.

Interment will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery.
