Henry was a son of George Nicol Hertel (1775-1850) and Johanna Marie Herber (1787-????).

He immigrated to Canada in 1847 at the age of 26 years.

Henry got married to Caroline Emilie Scherner on Dec. 25, 1852 in Greenbush (Kitchener), by Rev. F.W. Bindeman.

They raised 11 children in Ontario Province.
