Grace Opal Hutchinson (Shaw) was born October 17, 1889 in Custer County, Idaho, the youngest child of Elias Hutchinson and Minnie Etta Calkins Hutchinson. Her brother Ralph Roger was born on Feb. 9, 1885, sister Ellen Inez was born on June 3, 1886 and Bertie who was born in May of 1888 and died in October of that year from whooping cough. Elias and Minnie were divorced and when Grace was five and half years of age, her mother Minnie married Patrick J. Tierney. Grace had five younger Tierney siblings: Alice Coral, Garnett Dewey, Lloyd Martin, Edith Myrl and Stephen Patrick. She was eighteen years of age when her mother died in Sept. 1907 in Caldwell, Idaho. Grace finished school, became a teacher and assumed responsibility for the care of her youngest sister, Edith. Their devotion to one another lasted throughout their lifetimes.
Grace married Jesse Edgar Shaw on December 31, 1931 in Idaho. In 1921 Grace and Jesse, their three children, Roger, Lester and Dorothy May, and sister, Edith move to Long Beach, California where little Dorothy May who was born in June 1919, died on April 9, 1923 from Bronco Pneumonia. Jesse worked for Lange Transportation Co. and built the family home at 5141 Pacific Ave. where their son, Donald was born July 28, 1924. Jesse died January 2, 1938. Their eldest son Roger Edgar Shaw was killed in the South Pacific on Nov. 18, 1944 while serving in the U.S. Army during World War Two.
Grace was very active in her Church and very devoted to her faith. She passed away on March 22, 1977. She was survived by her two sons, Lester and daughter-in-law Audrey Fisher Shaw of Palm Springs, and Donald N. Shaw and daughter-in-law Peggy Lynch Shaw of Long Beach, three grandsons, Jeffery, Bruce and Roger Shaw; two granddaughters, Maureen and Melissa Shaw; brother-in-law William E. 'Ed' Blair of Ukiah, CA; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
