Born in Fredericksburgh, Ontario, Canada, Jane was the first child born to John Shibley Huffman and his wife Lavina Fralick. She moved with her family to the Belleville area while still a child and eventually settled in the town of Frankford. She later married Jacob D. Fretz with whom she had four children, only one of which survived to maturity. She died in the Chicago, Illinois near where she had gone to live with her daughter and is buried in a plot that she and her husband share with her parents.
