Born in Belleville, James was the fifth of eight children born to John Shibley Huffman and his wife Lavina Fralick. James spent his childhood in Canada, but followed his brother to the US to pursue a livelihood. While there he met Aldura Stewart, a sibling of his sister-in-law. They were married in 1859 in Laona, Ill. The pair had 10 children together. The family returned to Canada for a time, but eventually rejoined his brother's family in Iowa where he went into the hotel business. His wife proceeded him in death.
