Sarah Goodhue Cunningham, 102, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away at Sunnyside Retirement Home on January 6, 2016.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, during the disastrous 1913 Ohio River Valley Flood, the delivering physician rowed his boat into the home’s first floor, tied up to the banister and climbed the stairs to a second-floor bedroom, where she was delivered to Ralph and Clara Goodhue.

Sarah grew up in Marietta, Ohio, graduated from Marietta College with Phi Beta Kappa Honors, and later received a master’s degree from Ohio State University. She was a member of Chi Omega social sorority. She pursued a career in education, teaching at different times on the elementary, high school and university levels. She later accepted a position as director of elementary education for the Orange County School System near Cleveland, a position she held until she met and married Leslie G. Cunningham, a Canadian World War I fighter pilot. Their first home together was in Burlington, Ontario. They later relocated to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where they lived until his death at which time she moved to St. Catharines, Ontario. After 35 years in Canada, she moved to Harrisonburg from St. Catharines and in the spring of 1997 into the Highlands of Sunnyside and became a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Surviving family members include nieces, Nancy Blair Leonard of Oaks Park Ill., Susan Blair of Missoula, Mont., and Janet McCart of London, Ontario; nephews, Allan Meyer of Richmond, Va., and Hugh Helliwell of Collingwood, Ontario; a very special cousin, Jane Lee of Stillwater, Minn.; and a foster daughter, Stravula Chalamandari of Athens, Greece.

She was preceded in death by her parents and older sisters Mary and Nancy.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Her ashes will be placed in the family plot in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Goodhue Scholarship Fund in care of Marietta College, Marietta, OH 45750.

An obituary was published in the Daily News-Record and The Marietta Times on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
