Six Burned in L.A. Fire
LOS ANGELES – Six men were burned, four critically, in a blast and fire today at the United States Rubber Co. plant in the East Los Angeles industrial district, sheriff's deputies reported.
The explosion occurred in a machine used to make carbon black for tires. The injured were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
County fire dispatcher R.N. La Vigne identified the injured employees as Joe Broz, Clem Demarest, Fred Akins, Frank Gutierrez Jr., Lonnie Walker and Jessie Lynn. Akins suffered the worst burns.
County firemen said the explosion caused a flash fire that was soon extinguished. Seven pieces of fire equipment and several ambulances converged at the plant, located at 5625 Telegraph Rd.
The rubber company plant has 2,200 employees.

LOS ANGELES – One of the six men seriously injured in a blast and fire at the U.S. Rubber Co. plant Friday died in a hospital Saturday.
Fred Akins, 43, of 2911 N. Maxon St., El Monte, died of burns in Good Samaritan hospital.
Still in serious condition at the hospital are Joe Broz, 54, Jessie Lynn, 30, and Lonnie Walker Jr., 35, all of Los Angeles. In less serious condition are Clem Demarest, 42, El Monte, and Frank Gutierrez Jr., 36, Compton.

Rubber Plant Blast Takes Third Life
LOS ANGELES – A rubber plant explosion took the life of a third workman Sunday.
Jesse Lynn, 31, died of burns received Friday in a mixing machine blast at the U.S. Rubber Co. plant here. Fred Akins, 43 and Clem Demarest, 42, succumbed Saturday.
A fourth workman, Joe Broz, 54, was given little chance to survive. Two others were burned less seriously in the explosion which did an estimated damage of more than $50,000.
