Joel was the son of Ivan John "Jay" McFerran Bollinger and Bessie A. Herrin McFerran Bollinger Smith . His sister from his mother's second marriage was Mary Patricia Smith. His siblings from his father's second marriage were Cheryl, Jay David, Dianne, Phillip and Paul. His first marriage was to Joan Delorse Jordan on March 15, 1965 in Gulfport, Mississippi. They had one son, Marvin Jay. His second marriage was to Connie in Kansas City, Kansas and they had one son, Joel "Joey". His third marriage was to Brenda Lee Nelson in Kansas City, Kansas. They had one daughter, Penny Dawn. Maternal grandparents were William Herrin and Mary Azaline Jones. Paternal grandparents were Ivan John McFerran Sr. and Iva Ann Akers. Paternal step-grandfather was Elmer E. Bollinger.
