Bill Alvis, Jr. passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 at St. Dominic in Jackson. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 4, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Bill was born on April 7, 1935 in Homestead, FL to the late William Alvis, Sr. and Letha Mae Brown Alvis. In 1955 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served as an infantry squad leader in the Korean War, with the First Marine Division. He then enlisted in the United States Army in 1962 and was later assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division (The Old Guard). In 1965, Bill was selected for Officer Candidate School. He later served two combat tours in Vietnam. The first, as an infantry officer in the 1st Air Cav, where he fought in the battle of la Drang, and the second as a Team Leader for MACV (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam) advising South Vietnamese soldiers, and leading them in combat. During his service in Vietnam, he received two Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, amongst other awards. His proudest achievements included his graduation from Officer Candidate School, membership on the US Army Rifle Team, and instructorship at the US Army Infantry Advanced Course. Bill was renowned for being an expert marksman, as well as having an encyclopedic knowledge of infantry tactics, and military history.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Peters Alvis; sons, Billy Alvis and Jonathon Alvis; and grandchildren, Jon Alvis, William Alvis, Benjamin Alvis, and Logan Alvis.
