There are problems with this memorial. I won't go into how I figured this all out but here is the time line and the proper name to go on the memorial for "Rebecca J. Speer."

According to the Missouri Death Certificates, 1910 – 1962, she was born Rebecca J. Crownover on March 19, 1873 in Reynolds Co., Mo. and died on October 02, 1941 in St. Louis, Mo.

According to the Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002, Rebecca J. Crownover first married John E. Davis (1871 - Reynolds Co., Mo.

Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002
Name Spouse Marriage Date Marriage County
Rebecca Crownover John E Davis 17 Jul 1889 Reynolds

I don't know the reason but that marriage did not even last a year and when Rebecca J. Crownover Davis married again she used her maiden name.

According to the Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002, Rebecca's second marriage was to William E. Speer on March 20, 1890 in Reynolds Co., Mo.

Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002
Name Spouse Marriage Date Marriage County
Rebecca Crownover W E Speer 20 Mar 1890 Reynolds

Here is the family in 1900 because it becomes important later in this scenario.

Name names Home in 1900
(City, County, State) Birth Date Birthplace Relation to Head of House
William Speer Reynolds, Missouri Jul 1868 Illinois Head
Rebecca J Speer Reynolds, Missouri Mar 1873 Missouri Wife
Oda L Speer Reynolds, Missouri Mar 1891 Missouri Daughter
Lula M Speer Reynolds, Missouri Aug 1893 Missouri Daughter
Elsie M Speer Reynolds, Missouri Sep 1898 Missouri Daughter
****************************************************************
According to Find A Grave, William E. Speer died in 1907. According to the Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002, Rebecca J. Crownover Davis Speer married John Gurley on October 26, 1908 in Reynolds Co., Mo.

Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002
Name Spouse Marriage Date Marriage County
Rebecca J Speer John Gurley 26 Oct 1908 Reynolds
******************************************************************
In the 1910 census for Reynolds Co., Mo., you will notice that John Gurley and Rebecca J. Crownover Davis Speer Gurley had a son but also she brought several step-children to this 3rd marriage and they have moved from Reynolds Co., Mo. to St. Francois Co., Mo. Elsie Speer can be found both in 1900 and 1910 which adds additional credibility to my research. In the 1910 census, both John Gurley and his wife say they were married twice. I am not sure why Rebecca says twice instead of 3 times unless the first marriage was annuled or it lasted so shortly that she did not consider it a marriage.

Name Home in 1910
(City, County, State) Birth Year Birthplace Relation to Head of House
John Gurley Sr. Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1850 Illinois Head
Rebecca J Gurley Randolph, Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1873 Missouri Wife
Walter Gurley Randolph, Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1910 Missouri Son
Elsie M Speer Randolph, Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1899 Missouri Step Daughter
Delpha I Speer Randolph, Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1902 Missouri Step Daughter
Ervin Speer Randolph, Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1904 Missouri Step Son
Naomia Speer Randolph, Saint Francois, Missouri abt 1905 Missouri Step Daughter
******************************************************************
John Gurley (1850 - Ill.) dies between 1910 and 1920 probably in St. Francois Co., Mo. but I have no date of death or burial location for him.
******************************************************************
In the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses, Rebecca J. Crownover Davis Speer Gurley lives with differnt children and their families. By the time of her death on October 02, 1941 she was living at 611 Lami in St. Louis, Mo. but 12 days before her death she was admitted to the St. Louis Hospital #1 where she died.
*******************************************************************
In my opinion, the memorial should read Rebecca J. Gurley with maiden name of Crownover. It would be nice to include the information about her 3 marriages to show how her life progressed. I have no idea of why she was buried with her 2nd husband instead of her third unless he is buried with his first wife.

Note: Rebecca' lists her parents as Unknown Crownover and Charity Chitwood but I have been unable to come up with a family like that which includes Rebecca as a daughter.
