Kermit Torkelson Rites Held In Austin Wednesday

Kermit Girad (sic) Torkelson, 52, died at the home of his mother Mrs. Belle Torkelson, in Lyle Sunday morning, November 11. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 14 at Jordan Mortuary in Austin, Minn, with the Rev. Arthur Sewenson officiating. Interment was in Six Mile Grove Lutheran cemetery, with American Legion Post 105 of Lyle in charge of military rites.

Kermit G. Torkelson, was born July 7, 1910 at Lyle, the son of Dr. Peter and Belle Torkelson. He was baptized in Illinois and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran church in Lyle by the Rev. Vang.

He attended the Lyle school and graduated from high school in 1928. He then attended McPhail School of Music and an Aviation school in Minneapolis.

Kermit entered the service in January, 1942, and served in the Pacific-Asiatic theatre and the China-Burma-India theatre. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross with the Oak Leaf Cluster and flew 76 combat missions. He was honorably discharged in September 1945, after a distinguished career in the service.

He was united in marriage with Katherine Peterson, September, 27 1947, at Austin, Minnesota, where they resided on Route 1.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 105, of Lyle.

Surviving are his widow, Katherine, his mother Mrs. Belle Torkelson, Lyle,; three sons, David, James and John; two daughters, Janet and Julie, and one sister (Aubie) Mrs. George Burtness of Solvang, California,

Preceding him in death were his father, Dr. Peter Torkelson, (former Lyle physician) who died in 1930, his brother Lieutenant Elmo Torkelson, who died in 1940.

Pallbearers were Gerald Hungeford, Alvin Ludvigson, Francis Murphy, Orville Trettin, Russell Anderson and Wayne Hartson.

Attending the services from out of town were Mrs. Emil Wulf and Mrs. Robert Wulf both of Granite Falls, Minnesota.
