Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1955 to 1966), he played at the third baseman position with the Boston Red Sox and California Angels. Born Frank James Malzone, he attended Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx, prior to being signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1947. Following service with the United States Army during the Korean War, he marked his Major League debut with Boston on September 17, 1955. In 1957, he secured the starting third baseman position with the Red Sox and remained there for the next nine seasons, as he earned All-Star status six times. Additionally, he distinguished himself as a fine defensive player and received the Gold Glove Award three-times. In 1,441 career regular season games, he compiled 1,486 hits with a .274 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he remained in the game and served as a longtime advanced scout with the Boston Red Sox. Malzone was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1995.
