Joseph Allen, Jr. was the son of Joseph Allen, Sr. and unknown (they married in Ireland). Joseph, Jr. had a brother Thomas. Their father Joseph Allen, Sr., died in Philadelphia, shortly after he arrived there. His father was the brother of William Allen, Jr. also buried here. In 1730, he came to this country from Northern Ireland at about age 2. He married Jane Riddle and they had 2 known children, James and Joseph Allen.

Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church by Rev. Thomas H. Robinson, D.D. (1828-1906) With a Notice of the Church at Conewago, by A. Boyd Hamilton, Harrisburg, PA, Dauphin County Historical Society, 1878, page 39: "*Allen, Joseph," died 1817. It notes (*) his death was "collated from other sources" and not from a tombstone reading, page 39. He does not have an existing gravestone. Many large stones, etc. have been removed overtime. A Joseph Allen was a church contributor and member from 1787 - 1818 and Joseph Allen, Jr was also from 1795 - 1838, page 30. A Joseph Allen contributed 1£, 13 shillings to the church cemetery wall installation in 1797. The amount was equal to the annual county tax he paid, page 35.

In 1766, a Joseph Allen was an overseer of the roads in Dauphin County. History of the Counties of Dauphin and Lebanon in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, by William Henry Egle, Philadelphia, 1883, p 426.

I suspect this is the Joseph Allen, Soldier and Patriot listed on the SAR Veterans of the Revolutionary War plaque at the cemetery gate entrance. There is a Revolutionary War metal beside his son Joseph Jr.'s gravestone, who was too young to serve (aged 14 at the end of the war).
