Lyerly was the fifth of six children born to Henry Sylvester and Ethel May (Miller) Setzer. He married Barbara Ann (Dellinger) in 1952 and they were the parents of two daughters, Gail and Nanette. He later married Faye Gordon (Howie). No childen from this union.

STATESVILLE - Lyerly Eugene "Bill" Setzer, 85, of Statesville died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House. He was born in Iredell County, May 10, 1928, to the late Henry S. and Ethel Miller Setzer. He was a World War II veteran, serving first in the Merchant Marines and then the Army/Air Force. Survivors include his daughters, Gail Parks and husband, Robert, of Huntersville and Nanette Harkey of Bessemer City; stepdaughter, Kelly Smith and husband, Greg, of Gastonia; sisters, Lorene Lamberth of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Estalene Berry of Baytown, Texas; brother, Larry Setzer of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Rebecca Parks, Clinton Parks, Anita Mercer, Amber Gardner, Brandon Harkey, Kevin Harkey and Kris Smith; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sharon Lutheran Church, 2116 Island Ford Rd., Statesville, NC 28625. A funeral service will be held at Sharon Lutheran Church, at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 29, with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
