Irene G. Riehl, 80, died peacefully Nov. 13, 2008, at her home in Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Clem Gustin as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Raleigh.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a rosary at 4 p.m. by the combined groups of the Catholic Daughters, Christian Mothers and the Christ the King Quilters. A parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Irene was born July 7, 1928, in Flasher, the daughter of Michael and Rose (Schmidt) Gustin. She was raised and educated in Flasher. Irene married Emil Riehl on June 24, 1946, in Flasher.
Irene's enormous amount of energy and her continuous positive attitude drove her to constantly challenge herself and to be active in many things. "Can't be done" was never a part of her vocabulary. Above all, Irene would lend her support to her husband in the operation of the dairy farm and the many tasks of raising their family. Her leadership abilities were recognized in the 4-H club, where she would involve the entire family. Her beautiful alto voice was an inspiration to her children, and a highlight for Irene was to sing with family members at their gatherings. After the age of 40, she completed her GED and learned to play guitar. Irene was the vice president of the Democratic Legislator's Wives; was active in N.D. Right to Life, Raleigh Homemakers Club, Catholic Daughter of America, Christian Mothers and Christ the King Quilters. She also shared her talents by singing and playing guitar for the children's Mass at Christ the King. Her grandchildren will always cherish the afghans that she lovingly crocheted for each of them. She learned French so she could better communicate with her grandchildren who live in France.
This generous, kind woman, who always put others first, will be greatly missed by her husband of 62 years, Emil Riehl, Bismarck; four daughters, Judy (Al) Adler, San Diego, Colette Riehl, Tallahassee, Fla., Margaret Riehl, Mandan, and Emily (Michael) Gibbons, Toulouse, France; six sons, David (Gretchen), Dallas, Thomas (Sharon), Bonduel, Wis., Andrew (Paula), Center, James (Cressa), Henderson, Texas, Bill (Gina), Raleigh, and Richard (Amy), Dalton, Pa.; 23 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Angela (Bert) Kopp, Olympia, Wash., Phyllis Restivo, Lockport, N.Y., and Vern Goeppinger, Alice (Al) Ternes, Isabelle (Roger) Mahrer and Joan Eckroth, all of Bismarck; four brothers, the Rev. Clem Gustin, OSC, Onamia, Minn., Paul (Leona) Gustin, Bismarck, Andrew (Shirley) Gustin, Velva, and Hugo (Martha) Gustin, Granada Hills, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Linda Gustin, Barker, N.Y..
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Adam Geiger III; her sisters, Carol Miller-Kuntz and Cecelia Hoffman; her brothers, Fred and John Gustin; and her brothers-in-law, Charles Restivo, Nick Kuntz, Stally Miller, Leo Eckroth, Bill Goeppinger and Rass Hoffman.
