Wyatt Schaller Yon was born on May 14, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to Wyatt Leslie and Catherine (Schaller) Yon. The family moved to Storm Lake in 1933. During his youth he attained the level of Eagle Scout. Wyatt attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1950. He was graduated from Northwestern University in 1954. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956, eighteen months of this time was spent in Japan. In October of 1956 he joined his father in the Wyatt Yon Agency in Storm Lake, an insurance, real estate, and farm management firm. On June 22, 1958, Wyatt was married to Lola Deanne Kelsey, daughter of Reed and Margaret Kelsey of Storm Lake.

Wyatt was a 55 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Abu Bekr Shrine, and a past member of the Elks. He was an active member of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce while he was in business and served as president. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Storm Lake Jay Cee’s in 1966. He is a past president of the Storm Lake Library Board, also serving as chairman of the building committee when the new library and Witter Gallery were built. Wyatt served as mayor of Strom Lake in 1975, and was instrumental in promoting the addition of trees and planters when Lake Avenue was redone in that year. He is a past director of Citizen’s First National Bank and the First National Company. He also was on the advisory board of Job Service of Iowa. Wyatt was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he served as trustee and elder, and was a member of the planning committee for the renovation of the sanctuary in 1976.

Preceding Wyatt in death are his parents, his wife Lola on September 23, 1990, and brother-in-law, James Prichard.

Surviving Wyatt are his two children; Wyatt K. Yon of West Des Moines and Catherine Y. and her husband Thomas J. Elward of Chicago, IL. Also surviving are four grandchildren; Elizabeth Grace Elward, Daniel John Elward, Wyatt Samuel Yon and Ella Catherine Yon, one sister, Eloise Prichard of Storm Lake, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
