Olive May (Peterson) Schoof passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at Diversicare of Council Grove, at the age of 96.

She was born October 10, 1919, to M.R. & Merna Peterson, at the family farmhome, near Delavan, Kansas. Ollie, as most knew her, was the second of 6 siblings, Glenna, Helen, Don, Bob, & Elda Ruth. She attended Grandview School, a rural county school, graduating in 1937, as valedictorian. Following graduation she attended Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia. She taught in the fall of 1938 at Six Mile School in Morris County, KS. She met a widower, Gail A. Schoof, and they were married in 1941, when she immediately became the step-mom to 12 year old Gwendolyn Rose Schoof.

Each summer she continued taking college classes, and received her Bachelors of Science in Education in 1955 and her Masters of Science in Education in 1965. Olive taught in the Council Grove school system for most of her career and retired after 45 years. She was an active member in the community, a life member of the Methodist Church, member of Daughters of the American Revolution, a 4-H leader, and active in national, state and local teachers associations.

Ollie and Gail were married for 50 years, until his passing in 1991. They lived in the four mile community for 37 years, enjoying going to movies, bowling, dancing and playing cards with the four mile and diamond springs neighbors. She so enjoyed going to the cattle markets in Kansas City with Gail and friends.

In 1950, to her great delight, Ollie became a young grandma to William H. Williams, IV (Rick) and again in 1952 to Nancy Gail Williams. Never having children of her own she assisted in naming her third grandchild Erin Leann Williams in 1965. Rick was the primary care taker of Ollie during her waning years, as he was closest in proximity and also to her heart.

Olive enjoyed traveling and took many trips over the years, with her sisters and other friends. She so enjoyed attending the Bowling family reunions with her siblings. In later years, she so appreciated her niece, Ronda Ann for taking over the driving duties. Ollie learned to sew in her youth from necessity and continued into later years making many beautiful quilts.

After driving to town almost daily, and sometimes more than once a day, for 37 years, they moved to Council Grove, where she continued living until moving into the Council Grove assisted living facility in 2009. After almost 3 years and needing more assistance with daily living duties she entered the Council Grove Nursing Home until her passing. Her days as a resident of the nursing home were less traumatic due to the extra loving care of her great granddaughter, Kelly Hutchinson who is a nurse at the nursing home.

Left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Rick (Laurie) Williams, Council Grove, KS, Nancy (Max) Dapron, Colorado Springs, CO, Leann (Greg) Brown, Ft. Collins, CO; great grandchildren, Kelly ( Frank) Hutchinson, Council Grove, KS, and Addie Brown, Ft Collins CO; 3 great-great-grandchildren, Dylan Booth, Surprise, AZ, and Zoe and Willow Hutchinson, Council Grove KS; brother, Don Peterson, Council Grove, KS; many step-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Olive was predeceased by her husband Gail Schoof; step-daughter Gwenny & husband Bill Williams; parents M.R. & Merna Peterson; siblings, Glenna Monfort, Helen Mayfield, Robert Peterson and Elda Ruth Nedrow; nephew, Gary Mayfield; granddaughter- in-law Adela Williams; and after living for 96 years, many other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Monday, December 21, 2015, at Zeiner Funeral Chapel. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Gail in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Council Grove Methodist Women Club or Council Grove Senior Center. They may be sent in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846. The family wishes to extend their heart felt gratitude to the staffs of the Council Grove Assisted Living facility, Diversicare and especially to great-granddaughter, Kelly Hutchinson and family, and to friends and family members who remembered her by visits and prayers.
