Daisy Lee Bell died Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at her home in Chicago.
Ms. Bell was born Jan. 20, 1941, to the late Henry Lee and Josephine Fox-Bell in Vicksburg, the second of five children. Her twin brother, Henry Lee Bell Jr. preceded her in death at birth.
She was a member of Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Vicksburg, where she served as adult Sunday school teacher, president of the junior choir, Baptist Training Union leader and participated in other church programs.
In 1973, she joined South Shore United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the sanctuary choir, trustee committee, staff-parish relations committee, lay leadership committee, lay delegate to the annual conference, certified lay speaker, liturgist, day care board, and United Methodist Women, where She was president of the South Shore Unit and served at the Chicago Southern District level for more than eight years. She was a Bible study leader, MetroWomen’s Auxiliary president for several years and a member of Marcy-Newberry Association.
She attended Kings Elementary School through the eighth-grade and graduated all-county valedictorian. She graduated as valedictorian from Rosa A.Temple High School in 1959, and received a bachelor of science in music with concentration in voice from Jackson State University.
She received a master of education in music from the University of Chicago, Champaign-Urbana, Ill., and later received a master of education and certification in administration and supervision and learning disabilities. She was also a registered real estate agent.
Ms. Bell began teaching as a music teacher and choir director in September 1963 at Obannon High School in Greenville, and was an elementary music teacher for the Vicksburg Municipal Separate School System at Bowman and Ken Karyle Elementary schools.
In 1970, she taught in the Chicago Public School System at Armstrong Elementary School, Carver High School, Washington High School, Phillips High School, where she was head of the music department. She was assistant principal and head of music department, music teacher and instructor for flag girls and majorettes at Corliss High School, and served as principal of Hirsch Metropolitan High School. She retired in 2002.
She was active in several community organizations including the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Deltas Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Mu Chapter of Chicago, and the National Council of Negro Women.
Survivors include her sisters, Julia Curry of Chicago, Helen B. Bowman and Mary Alice Kenney, both of Vicksburg; a nephew, niece and other family members and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James Warren officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
