Thomas M. King was born about 1857/60 probably in the lower part of Whitley County that is now part of McCreary Co., Kentucky. McCreary was created in 1912 out of Whitley, Pulaski and Wayne Counties. His currently unknown middle name was probably Murray, after his paternal grandfather, Thomas Murray King.

To some his parents are debatable. Some suggest that his parents may have been John and Mary (MNU) King of Pulaski County. Currently, however, there does not appear to be any documentation to support this suggestion.

Another proposal is that he was the grandson of John B. Waddle (1785- ?) and Mary MNU (1790- ?). The 1860 and 1870 US Censuses show them as living in Pulaski Co., KY (Somerset post office) with a Thomas King b.1857 in KY), apparently a grandchild, in their household. However, once again, there appears to be no documentation to support any family connection.

Thomas is thought by most to have been the son of Jackson H. King (abt 1817-1857/59 ?) and Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Angel (1822-1891). He appears in the 1870 and 1880 US censuses with his widowed mother, Eliza, and his siblings, but does not seem to appear in any census thereafter and is thought to have died about 1885.

Thomas' father, Jackson H. King, was the son of Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880) and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881). He was the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co., KY, having moved his family about 1819 (some say 1825-29) from NW Campbell Co. (now NE Scott Co.), TN to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.), KY. Both of Jackson's parents are buried in the Duncan Cemetery in McCreary Co., KY on land that they once owned.

Thomas' mother, Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Angel (1822-1891), was the daughter of Archibald Andrew "Arch" Angel (1775-1847) and Nancy Ann Trammell (1782-1829). Arch was born in the British Province (Colony) of North Carolina, while Nancy was born in the state of North Carolina. Both died in Campbell Co., Tennessee and are buried in the Angel Family Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery) near Ketchen, Scott Co., TN. Nancy was raised on the farm that surrounds that cemetery.

Archibald was the son of English immigrant, William Angel (1752-1853), and Mary Rachel Goodwin (abt 1752-bet 1841/50), born in the British Province of North Carolina. Thomas' maternal grandmother, Nancy Ann (Trammell) Angel, was the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Dennis Trammell (1759-1849), and Elizabeth Brassfield? (abt 1757-abt 1820).

To summarize, Thomas M. (Murray ?) King is thought to have been the son of Jackson H. King (1817-1857/60) and Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Angel. Jackson was the son of Thomas Murray King and Mary Rebecca Cox. Eliza was the daughter of Archibald "Arch" Angel and Nancy Ann Trammell.

On July 20, 1880 in Scott Co., TN, Thomas, about 23, married his 16 year old cousin, Rebecca Jane "Becky" King (1864-1950). This is where it really starts to get confusing.

Rebecca, named after her paternal grandmother, Mary Rebecca (Cox) King, was the daughter of Jackson H. "Jack" King (1842-1919) and his currently unknown first wife . Her father was named after her grandfather's (Enos King) brother, Jackson H. King. Consequently, Rebecca and her husband, Thomas, had fathers with the same name, that being Jackson H. King.

Rebecca's father, Jackson, was the first born child of Enos King (abt 1816-bet 1892/1900) and Nancy Angel (abt 1820-bet 1892/1900). Rebecca's grandfather, Enos was the son of Thomas Murray King. Enos's wife and Rebecca's grandmother, Nancy Ann Angel, was an older daughter of Archibald Angel, and thus, a sister to her husband's mother, Eliza Jane Angel. Enos and Nancy are buried in the King Family Cemetery (aka Laurel Creek Cemetery) in McCreary Co., KY while Archibald and Eliza are buried in the Angel Family Cemetery (aka Angel-Wright Cemetery) in Scott Co., TN.

Jane's unknown mother apparently died (1864-69) while Jane was a baby (childbirth complications ?) or while Jane was a very young child. Jane is thought to have been raised first by her father's parents (Enos and Nancy) and then by her father's second wife, Mary Ann "Polly" Stephens (1845-1910), who her father married in 1869. She was the daughter of Whitmill Stephens (abt 1809-1866) and Elizabeth Waters (abt 1807-bet 1871/80). Jackson, Polly, Whitmill and Elizabeth are all buried in the Stephens Cemetery in Isham, Scott Co., TN.

Again, to summarize, Jane's parents were Jackson H. "Jack" King (1846-1919) and an unknown mother. Her paternal grandparents were Enos King and Nancy Ann Angel. Her paternal great-grandparents were Thomas Murray King and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox.

Thomas and Jane were married for at least three years and had one known child. That child was Mary Martha King (1883-1959). As an adult Martha would marry cousin, Mathew King (1878-1926), son of Elisha S. King (1837-1892) and Rosa "Rosie" Duncan (1842-bet 1880/90?). Elisha was another son of Thomas Murray King (1790-1880) and thus, a brother to her father's grandfather (Enos King) and to her mother's great-grandfather (Jackson H. King). Confused ?

Thomas is said to have suffered a severe head injury (abt 1884) while logging and was never the same mentally. Prior to the injury he is said to have been a normal hard working husband/father. Eventually, he had to be hospitalized in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY at Eastern Kentucky Lunatic Asylum (established 1824, later renamed Eastern State Hospital) in order to receive 24/7 care and supervision.

Thomas died while a patient at Eastern (mid 1880s ?) around the age of 28 (?). He is buried in the hospital cemetery in an unmarked grave. There are thousands of former patients who are buried on the old hospital grounds, however, only three of the deceased patients have markers. A memorial monument had been erected to remember the lives of the unmarked burials.

After Thomas' death, his wife, Rebecca, had one child (Dilla "Dillie" King, 1886-1912), by a Josh Stephens. Almost nothing is known about Josh and it is unknown if Rebecca and Josh were actually married. His name appears on Dillie's death certificate as her father but may be a mistake.

About 1904, the widowed Rebecca married John B. Perry (1871-1973). They were distant cousins, having the same great-grandparents, Thomas Murray King and Mary Rebecca Cox. Rebecca and John were married for nearly 45 years and had three children: Rosa Elizabeth "Rose" Perry (1905-1933), Mathew Perry (1906-1930) and Rev. Alvin Jesse Perry (1910-1990).

Rebecca died at the age of 86 on Apr. 14, 1950 in at her home in Smith Town, McCreary Co., KY. She is buried there, next to her husband, John, in the Hickman Cemetery.
