Mrs. Elizabeth Roff Friel, wife of Gay N. Friend, of the city, died at the home of her father, Stanford M. Roff, of Mays Lick, Ky., at 6:46 o’clock last night of a sudden heart attack.
News of Mrs. Friel's death was received her by friends early today and came as a distinct shook to them as she was apparently well on the road to complete recovery from her recent operation.
Mrs. Friel had gone to the home of her father in Mays Lick about a month ago to recuperate from an operation which she underwent at the King’s Daughters Hospital here for routine appendicitis. She had dinner and soon suffered a heart attack from which she died a few minutes later.
Mrs. Friel had been dean of girls in Ashland School for the last twelve years where she made an enviable record. She came here from Paris Ky., and before going to Paris she taught in the Mays Lick schools.
Mrs. Friel received her education at Hamilton College and Transylvania University at Lexington. She received her master’s degree at Columbia University in New York City.
At Transylvania Mrs. Friel became a member of Beta Zeta Chapter of Delta Delta Delta and was very active in this work. She later was elected executive secretary of the National sorority if Delta Delta Delta. She was also a past president of the Kentucky Classical Association.
Her activities in educational circles were varied. She became widely known through her connection with sororities in which she was always a vital force.
She was a member of the Parent Teacher Association, the Ashland Education Association and of the Ashland Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Friel was born in Mays Lick and was a member of the Christina church of that place. She was the daughter of Stanford M. and the late Mrs. Maria Warter Roff one of the most prominent families in Mason County. Her forbears settled Mason county.
Besides her father Mrs. Friel is survived by her husband Gay N. Friel, one sister, Mrs. Preston Parker and one brother James Roff.
Funeral service is to be held Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock Ashland time, four o’clock Mays Lick time, from the Christian church at Mays Lick with Rev. Herbert Woodruff, pastor of the church, in charge, also by Rev. J. W. Hagin of Ashland. Burial will made in the Mays Lick cemetery.

Many thanks to Judy for this additional information.
