Taylor,Texas is where Amanda Kuykendall was born and reared. At the age of 16, while picking cotton on a Taylor farm, she met and married Scott Oregon, a "Cowboy" who drove cattle over trails from Texas to Oklahoma and on to Wyoming.
To this family, two children were born, a boy named Ira Scott Oregon, and a girl, Josie Helen Oregon. They later drifted to East Texas and settled in Palestine, where met and married Israel Hamilton "Hemp" Derry. To this couple a daughter was born, and they named her Jessel Laverne. Her grandparents, and mother and father were all faithful members of Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church until their deaths.
Jessel was raised in Palestine and attended Palestine Public schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1930. She married Herman Crist and to this union no children were born. Her work consisted of performing office work at A.M. Story School and receptionist for Dr. J. Don Jackson, Sr. She was very active in the community. Helping with voting as a voting clerk for many years. She was a founding member of the Palestine Negro Business and Professional Woman's Club.
