Lewis Clark Butler was born Dec. 26, 1924 ¡n Helena, MT to Frank Butler and Clara Tugel Butler. He died May 22, 2012 of age-related causes.
Clark grew up in Spencer, SD until age 12 when the family moved to Sioux Falls. At the time Herbert Unzicker became his stepdad.
After graduating from Washington High, Clark enlisted in the Navy in December of 1942. He participated in the capture of U-boat 505 (now on display in Chicago) in June of 1944. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946.
On March 10, 1945 Clark married Patty Elmen in Northfield, MN. After the war he was self-employed in retail display, then became a manufacturers’ rep in the Western industry. He thoroughly enjoyed playing cowboy as he visited Western stores over 6 states. He was known by his CB handle, “Mad Hatter”.
After retiring in 1994, Clark was outspokenly involved in the Democratic Party. He was also a member of the DAV, VFW, American Legion and Calvary Episcopal Cathedral.
Clark was predeceased by his parents and stepdad, and three infant children.
The family suggests memorials to the Calvary Cathedral Endowment Fund, the Children’s Inn or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday June 13, at 1:30 pm at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral.
