The following obituary was contributed by Donna Markey (thanks!) from the Daily Journal, Jamestown, NY, 29 Sep. 1881:
Almost a Centenarian
Thomas Mount died in Cherry Creek Wednesday, Sept. 21st, aged 99 years. Had he lived until Dec. 26th, he would have been a centenarian. His death took place at his son-in-law's, Milo Boutwell, with whom he had lived for a number of years past.
Thomas Mount was born in East Windsor, Mercer Co., N. J., Dec. 26, 1781. There, at twenty years of age, he was married to Rebecca Chamberlain, by whom he had fifteen children. All the children but one grew to man's and woman's estate. Sixty-nine years ago he moved to Sharon, Schoharie Co., N.Y., where he resided until 1835 when he moved to Cherry Creek and settled on lot 45. He afterwards purchased part of lot 44, where he continued to spend the remainder of his days.
Eight sons and five daughters, ten of whom are still living, became heads of families. Twenty six years ago he lost his wife.
He was a man of devoted piety, and brought up his large family in the fear and admonition of the Lord. That he taught his children wisely both by precept and example, is evident from the fact that they are all respected, useful and God fearing citizens. He had a word of admonition and cheer for all with whom he came in contact. He came down to his old age rich in faith, having served God for eighty years, and, like some of the old patriarchs lived to see his children's children, even to four generations.
S. B H Cherry Creek, Sept 28, 1881.
Note: The age at death as given on Thomas's gravestone does not precisely match his birth date as reported above. Apparently he was really 99 years, 8 months & 26 (not 20) days old when he died.
