Rev. Horne stated in the eulogy of Dovie Holliman Lawson that she was a saint and a pioneer. Her family agrees, but would add that She was a vivacious woman with quick wit. She loved her family dearly, and her family loved her dearly. She was faithful to God in all matters. She cooked for many during her lifetime and enjoyed doing so. She attended Unity Chapel Church of God for many years and Laurel First Church of God later in her life.

She was the daughter of Jack Holliman and Margaret Landrum of the Whitfield Community in Jones County, Mississippi. She met her husband, Owen William Lawson at a picnic in the Johnson Community. They were married December 12, 1929, in Jones County, Mississippi. Owen preceded her in death on June 9, 1990.
