Martha Jane "Mattie" Burnham was born in Marshall County, Kentucky on September 17, 1857, a daughter of Martin Frederick & Louisa Pace Burnham.

Mattie and Henry Sylvester Gray married in Scale, Marshall County, Kentucky on September 19, 1878.

They were blessed with nine children. The first six children, Ada Ninval, Edward Buel, Ella Dell, Frederick Chesterfield, Floyd, and Hattie Louisa, were born in Kentucky. The last three children, Beulah Mae, Maude Salome, and Bonnie Beatrice, were born in Texas.

Floyd died at a young age in Kentucky.

Funeral services for Mrs. H.S. Gray, 87, who died un-expectedly Sunday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hattie Gatewood, in Palestine, were held Tuesday December 5, at 2 o'clock at the Church of Christ there.
The services were conducted by Bro. Richey of Troup, with burial following in the Holly Springs cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Ed Gray of Carizzo Springs and Fred Gray of Abilene; six daughters, Mrs. Ada Williams of Slaton, Mrs. Beulah Nix of Waco, Mrs. Ella Turrentine of Cayuga, Mrs. Gatewood, Mrs. Bonnie Sides and Mrs. Maude Bernard of Palestine; two brothers, Dan Barnham of Athens and Frank Barnham of Corsicana.
