Myrtle Helms Hancock, 90, formerly of Vesta, Va., died Sunday evening, September 17, 2000 at R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. She had been a patient in the hospital's Skilled Care Unit for almost nine years.

Born August 1, 1910 in Patrick County to the late Matthew B. and Rosa Thomas Helms, she was the widow of Henry F. Hancock.

Mrs. Hancock also was preceded in death by four sisters, five brothers, and a son-in-law, Fred Underwood.

She was a graduate of Central Academy.

In addition to being a housewife and mother, she was a former postmaster at Vesta, taught school in Patrick County, was employed with the United Elastic Corporation, and was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Hancock is survived by a son and five daughters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hancock will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Rev. Fred Gilley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Meadows of Dan.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

Memorials may be made to the Vesta Rescue Squad.
