MARION, Va. James George Purefoy, age 77, of Marion, Virginia, passed away December 5, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born October 5, 1938 in Durham, North Carolina, to the late Beulah Purefoy. Mr. Purefoy retired from the United States Army in 1975 after 20 years of decorated service with tours of duty in Korea, Vietnam, and Europe. Following retirement, Mr. Purefoy served as a police officer for the Town of Marion, Virginia and worked several years at Blue Ridge Job Corps. James was a long time member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Marion. He was an skilled mechanic, an avid landscaper and a lover of animals. He was affectionately nicknamed the "Dog Whisperer." In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his brother, Benjamin Purefoy, and sister Beulah Mae Purefoy Farrington. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy L. Purefoy; five sons, James D. Purefoy and wife, Myra of Charlotte, N.C., David L. Purefoy of Richmond, Va., George D. Purefoy of Virginia Beach, Va., Daniel T. Purefoy and wife, Carlo of Montclair, N.J., and Donald S. Purefoy and wife, Miriam of Miami, Fla.; one daughter, Deirdre P. McGeachy and husband, Alfred of Lyon, France; grandchildren, Amanda Purefoy, Nicholas Purefoy, Donavan McGeachy, Gabrielle McGeachy, Lauren Chapman, Olivia Purefoy, Gavin Purefoy, Morgan Purefoy, Daniel Purefoy, Tori Purefoy, Leah Purefoy, Marlie Purefoy; step-grandchild, Nia Neunie; Jennifer Holman, and Jessica Scott; two brothers, Nathaniel Purefoy of Kansas City, Missouri, and Haywood Purefoy of Cleveland, Ohio; close cousin, George Purefoy Jr. of Cleveland Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Purefoy family will receive family and friends from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Friday December 11, 2015, at Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion, Virginia, prior to the funeral services at 11:30 am. The interment will immediately follow the funeral service at Rose Lawn Cemetery with full military honors being rendered by the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Team. We would like to extend special thanks to the staff at the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, Wytheville, Va., and Mountain State Alliance Regional Cancer Center, Marion, Va.
