Art Cullifer, age 73, of Emden MO, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015, at his residence near Emden.
He was born March 5, 1942, in Shelbina, MO, the son of William Leonard and Lerah Mae Young Cullifer. On December 17, 1960, he was united in marriage to Linda Lou Lyell at Prairie View Baptist Church near Hunnewell, MO. She survives.
Art is also survived by three children, Mark Cullifer and wife Mary of Moberly, MO, Kyle Cullifer and wife Angie of Macon, MO and Wendy Harrington and husband Pete of Shelbyville, MO; five grandchildren, Micki and Mackenzie Cullifer, Darren Cullifer, Taylor and Jared Harrington; mother-in-law, Mary Sue Lyell; two brother-in-laws, John E. Lyell and wife Pat, and Gerald Power and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jim Cullifer, sister Dora Mae Cullifer Power and his father-in-law, John A. Lyell.
Art was a member of Prairie View Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was a dump truck driver for Leonard Cullifer Trucking after high school, and then went on to become a Commercial Vehicle Inspector with the Missouri State Highway Patrol from October of 1965 to March of 1996 when he retired. He was then elected Sheriff of Shelby County and served two terms, January 1997 through December 2004. After retirement from the Sheriff’s Office, Art worked for Sinclair Research of Hatton, Missouri as well as enjoyed working for Ricketts Farm Supply. Throughout his career Art farmed with his father-in-law, John A. Lyell.
Art’s family meant the world to him and he found great joy with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed many hobbies including horses, tractor pulls, go-carts and sharing his humor with family and friends. He was loved by many and left a legacy of helping others and sharing his faith including his favorite bible verse of Romans 8:28.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO, with burial to follow at Andrew Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at the Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO. Memorials may be made to Prairie View Baptist Church or Hannibal Regional Hospital Foundation.
