John Ellsworth was the son of Thomas and Mary Ellsworth.
John had been born in Montreal, Canada.
He was 19 years old, when he and C B Tirrell, also from the area, joined up with the 1st Minnesota. His height was listed as 5' 8". Just prior to his enlistment he had been living in Chaska and working, for his uncle, in the Chaska Brick Yards.
John was wounded in the neck at Savage Station. He was severly wounded at Gettysburg. His leg was amputated but it proved too much for his physical endurance. He died a couple of weeks later, on July 20, 1863. He was 22 years old.
