Walter J. Nutt, a well known and highly respected life long resident of Mendon, died at 8:20 o'clock last evening at the family home In that village, aged 65 years. About 1:30 o'clock Mr. Nutt had an apoplectic strike , and was unconscious up to his death. A year ago Wednesday to the day he had the first stroke and from that time his health was never so good as before. He had given up business, turning over the management of his lumber yard to his son Frederick. In the death of Mr. Nutt, Mendon lost one of her best citizens. He had been prominent in business, socially, in church work and in other ways, and was greatly esteemed and known to most everybody in that village and vicinity. Mr. Nutt started in a small way, first learning the carpenter's trade. After some years he took up contracting and building and many are the dwellings and other structures that he erected in Mendon during his time. The deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Nutt, pioneer settlers of Mendon, and was born on the old Nutt farm place west of that village on August 1st, 1845. With the exception of one year spent on a farm in Missouri, he lived in Mendon all of his life. He was a member of the Masonic order and a few years back held the office of worshipful master. He also belonged to the Congregational church, served at different times as a member of the village board of trustees and once was township tax collector. He was a Republican, but never actively interested in politics. At the death of his father about ten years ago he assumed the management of the other lumber business, later taking the son Frederick into the firm. Mr. Nutt was married twice, and his second wife survives him. They were married on June 13th, 1877, in Quincy by Rev. Edward Anderson, then pastor of the Congregational church here. There were thirteen children, one by the first marriage and twelve by the second. Ten children are still living, four daughters and six sons, as follows: Helen Nutt, of Mendon; Mrs. R. M. Courtright, of Chicago; Mina E. and Harriett H. Nutt, of Mendon; Wallace, Frederick, Raymond and Harold Nutt, also of Mendon; Chester Nutt, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Roscue Nutt, of Chicago. There are also two brothers living, W. T. Nutt, who with his son is in the hardware and implement business, and C. H. Nutt, in the furniture business, both of Mendon. The funeral is to be conducted from the residence at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Mendon Masons probably will attend the services in a body.
