Nancy Ann Alice Ansley was born to James Nicholas Ansley and Princes P. Hill in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Her birth date was probably 18 November 1878. The family moved to Scott County, Mississippi in the mid 1880's and then James decided to follow his brothers to Robertson County, Texas between 1891 and 1894.

Nancy married Calvin Leroy Martin on 9 March 1897 in Robertson County, Texas. They had six known children together but only 4 survived infancy. An unnamed child born in 1904 and a girl named after her mother, Nancy Ann Alice, did not survive infancy. The four who survived were Elizabeth Edith, Julia Ann aka Jesse, Hattie Malinda and Deslay Wilma.

Nancy developed malaria prior to her death and her spleen became enlarged, sometimes a side effect of chronic malaria. Her spleen burst during the birth of Nancy Ann Alice and Nancy died two weeks later. Her baby died two weeks after that.

Prior to the baby's birth Nancy had been saving her silver dollars for a family picture. After she died, Calvin decided to have the picture take anyway with the girls. That picture is shown on the right.
