On December 23, 1927, Marshall Ratliff, Henry Helms, Robert Hill, all ex-cons, and Louis Davis, a relative of Helms, held up the First National Bank in Cisco. The crime became known as the Santa Clause Bank Robbery because Ratliff wore a santa Claus suit during the robbery. Chief_G._E._Bedford and Deputy George Carmichael were shot and died from their wounds. Several bank customers were wounded. Ratliff was sentenced to die. During an attempted escape on November 18, he killed Tom Jones. The next day an angry mob overtook the jail and lynched him. The first attempt proved unsuccessful when then knot failed. The second attempt succeeded.

He married Mattie Belle Minica on October 3, 1921.
