FARMINGDALE - Despite extraordinary effort on the part of first responders, Daniel King Alexander of Farmingdale, passed away at the age of 71 on Oct. 15, 2015 in Hampton Falls, N.H. while headed to his winter home in Clermont, Fla. with his wife Sandy.
Dan was a man of many accomplishments, but when it came right down to it, his life-long love affair with junior high sweetheart and soul mate Sandy was the pinnacle that made his life complete.
Dan was born on Feb. 2, 1944 in Augusta to George W. and Phyllis K. Alexander. He was predeceased by his parents, grandfather Dr. George W. Alexander, and his infant brother George. He was a 1962 graduate of Cheverus High School and served in the US Army from 1962 to 1965, teaching radar school and working with early drone designs. He was very proud of his military service, strongly supported veterans, and always flew the American and POW - MIA flags at his home and businesses.
Dan had a life-long connection and commitment to the local business community. As a young man he worked for E. C. Barry & Son, before becoming an assistant manager at W.T. Grant department store in Augusta. For over 20 years he was a partner at Rollins Furniture in Hallowell. He owned the Foggy Bottom car wash in Farmingdale, and sold boats as a partner at Foggy Bottom Marine. Most recently Dan and Sandy owned and operated the Foggy Bottom Campground & Marina on the Kennebec River in Farmingdale. Dan was a Registered Maine Guide, was a past board member of the Farmingdale Town Planning Office, past President of the Barnstormers Snowmobile Club, and served as Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 677. He was a current board member of the Gardiner Water District, an officer of the Riverview Credit Union in Gardiner, and Farmingdale's Harbor Master, a post he had held since 1994.
Dan and Sandy loved to travel. They made two trips to Europe together and traveled extensively throughout the lower 48 states. From family camping trips with the kids, to winter sojourns later in life to the Southwest and west coast with Sandy, Dan loved to explore new places and meet new people.
A three-sport athlete in high school, Dan re-lived his childhood as a fan, rarely missing one of his kids' sporting events. He was a passionate supporter at grandson Daniel's baseball games from Farm League through High School. He enjoyed golfing with family and friends from Maine to Florida. An avid sportsman throughout his life, Dan enjoyed fishing and hunting at favorite spots from Maine to Canada, Montana and Florida. Although not a man given to outward displays of emotion, family and friends never doubted Dan's love for those he held dear, and all who knew him recognized the soft heart behind the tough exterior. This was readily apparent in his interactions with his friends at the Foggy Bottom Marina and Campground. This business venture was a labor of love for Dan, and one of his favorite pastimes was bringing folks together for pancake breakfasts, lobster bakes, pizza nights, campfire gatherings, and genuine fellowship.
Dan is survived by junior high sweetheart and wife of 51 years, Sandra Louise Christopoulos Alexander; siblings Katherine Ann (Cooky) Alexander of Randolph, Molly Alexander (Lew Murray) of Chelsea; children Lawrence George Alexander and wife Dianna of Farmingdale, Debra (Alex) Bergeron and husband Rob of Poland and Daniel Kevin Alexander and wife Margie of Pendergrass, Ga.; and grandsons Daniel Lawrence Alexander of Melrose, Mass., Charles Jordan Bergeron and Nathan Andrew Bergeron of Auburn.
Burial with military honors will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt Vernon Rd. in Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
