BESSIE DAVIS

Funeral for Bessie Davis, 85, former owner of the Estrellita Café, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Portland Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Davis, a member of Assembly of God Church, died Sunday in a local hospital. She was born April 28, 1885, in Iowa.

Mrs. Davis lived in Minnesota between 1913 and 1945, when she was one of the state's first commercial turkey raisers. She came to Portland in 1945 and operated her café until 1961.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Frances Groppo, Portland; Mrs. Dale Alton, Little Sioux, Iowa; Mrs. Kermit Broselle, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Mrs. Richard Gushman, Haines; a sister, Hattie Engelke, Salt Lake City; two brothers, Mason Layton, Fremont, Calif., and Jasper Layton, Logan, Iowa; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Committal will be in Portland Memorial Indoor Cemetery.
