Henry was a harness maker by trade. During the Civil War, he was a 1st Lieutenant in Co. I, 160th Ohio Infantry. Henry was mayor of La Cygne 1871 to 1872, served two terms as police judge, and five terms on the La Cygne city council.

Henry's funeral was held in the La Cygne Opera House. All businesses in town closed at 1:00 p.m. and high school classes were cancelled at Noon so people could attend the funeral of "another of the country's brave defenders."
