Barbara Whittaker

OLEAN - Barbara Jean Whittaker, a lifelong resident of the area, went home to meet the Savior that she loved and served faithfully on Thursday (Nov. 26, 2015), surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Cuba, a daughter of C. Bradley and Elizabeth Luckey Bartlett. She quietly celebrated her 90th birthday the day before her death with her children and grandchildren. On July 7, 1944 in Muskogee, Okla., she married the love of her life, Pfc. Eugene Whittaker, prior to his service overseas during World War II. He predeceased her on March 11, 2000.

She attended Black Creek Elementary School, graduated from Cuba Central School, and studied at Houghton Bible College.

Early in her marriage she worked at Mead and Mead Accountants and the Cuba Patriot. She owned and managed the Pleasant Valley Motor Lodge with her husband. In her later years, she worked as a real estate agent, at H&R Block, and as a clerk at the town of Olean office where she also assisted at the election polls for many years.

Barbara's life was defined by her service to others. She was an active member of the Black Creek Congregational Church and the Maplehurst Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent, and was church treasurer. She and her husband worked side by side and helped construct an addition to the Maplehurst church in 1995. Barbara also researched and compiled a history of the church which was published in 2002 for its 175th anniversary.

Barbara served at Olean General Hospital as a member of the pastoral care volunteer staff, where she visited patients and offered comfort, a listening ear and prayer on their behalf. She was sensitive to those mourning the death of loved ones and frequently visited with them in their time of need. Just a few days prior to her death she was signing and sending greeting cards from her hospital bed, celebrating the birthdays of dear friends and sending condolences to families suffering losses.

She was an avid traveler, having visited 49 of the United States, all Canadian provinces, the Yukon, the British Isles, Mexico and Paris. She enjoyed writing and was a long time member of the Enchanted Mountain Creative Writers.

She frequently wrote stories about her life experiences and passed them to her children and grandchildren. Barbara diligently researched the genealogy of her and her husband's families and passed a treasure of information to her family members.

Barbara took great pride in her children. She is survived two sons, Alan (Lisa) Whittaker of Amherst and Dennis (Bonnie) Whittaker of Portville; and two daughters, Gayle Whittaker (Barry Bornstein) of Queens and Lori Whittaker of Jersey City, N.J. She dearly loved her grandchildren, Joshua (Stepheni), Kirsten, Adam, Hannah, Rachel, Quinn, Zachary, and Alyssa Whittaker and Marcel Whittaker Bornstein.

She was predeceased by her husband and parents; a daughter, Pamela Jean Whittaker; and her sisters Mildred and Grace.

Burial will be in the family plot at Black Creek Cemetery.
