He was married 1st on September 18, 1912 in Sumner County to Mai Belle Hale (1895-1922), and she was the daughter of John T Hale (1867-1953) and his wife Martha (Sweeney) Hale (1868-1920). He was married 2nd sometime between about 1923 and the 1930 census to Annie Laurie Hayes (1892-1975).
A retired boiler maker for Tennessee Central Railroad and living at 522 South 11th Street, Nashville, Joel was 64 years old and married when he died at home of heart problems on July 20, 1957. Burial was two days later in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
