The Rev. Daniel Duff, the ancestor of generations of Eastern Kentuckians, is the son of Shadrach Duff (whose father was likely also named Shadrach) and Deborah Dickson Duff. Daniel and sister Elizabeth were bonded to Mary Hamilton at Guilford Courthouse shortly after their father was killed on March 15, 1781 the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina (their mother died soon after). Daniel would marry Nancy Ann Allison Duff and move first to the Wallin Ridge section of Lee County, Virginia, where many of their children were born. He became a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church before he came to Kentucky. Arriving in old Clay County (now Perry County) where Colson Duff (born 1811) became the first of the couple's children to be born in Kentucky.
