Jacque “Jack” Warren Evans, 92, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015 at Atkinson Good Samaritan Society in Atkinson.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Caroline Price-Gibson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery, with military honors provided by United Veterans Honor Guard and U.S. Navy Honors Team. Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his son. Jacque C. Evans of Omaha; daughter, Paula Evans of O’Neill; grandson, Joseph Carl Evans of Kansas City; three stepchildren, Ken and Lisa Wilson of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Marcy Wilson of Denver, Colo., and Jim Wilson of Panama; sisters, Mary Ila Barber and Peggy Friedrickson; sister-in-law, Shirley Gass; and niece and nephew, Stephanie Wright and Stephen Gass.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn; his second wife, Shirley; his parents, Louis and Reva Evans; in-laws, Carl and Pauline Gass; sister, Shirley Schimmer; brother, Jerry Evans; and brother-in-law, Jerry Gass.

Mr. Evans was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Red Cloud to Reva and Louis Evans. He attended school in Red Cloud and Grand Island until he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served in WWII. While in the Navy, he played football for the Fleet City Blue Jackets. Upon his discharge, he attended the University of Nebraska and Kearney State Teachers College. He played football at both schools. In 1947, he married Marilyn Louis Gass. To this union two children were born, Jacque C. Evans and Paula Suzanne Evans. Marilyn passed away in 1990. He married Shirley Hoxy-Wilson in 1991. Shirley passed away in 2012.

Jacque taught school at Grand Island Senior High for 37 years. Part of that time was spent coaching football, track and wrestling. His football team won the State Championship in 1953. He also sold cars and refereed football and basketball games. He loved the mountains and spent his summers in Estes Park, Colo.

Jacque was known for his sense of humor and his caring manner. He was always an advocate for students, especially those with special needs or those who needed guidance.
