William “Shorty” Lyle, 90, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at his home.

Funeral services for Shorty will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. Public visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until services begin where his family will be present to greet friends. Shorty will be laid to rest at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

William J. Lyle was born on January 2, 1925 in Laurel, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Hannah (Carleton) Lyle. He was raised and educated in Laurel School District attending Laurel High School. Following his education, Shorty was employed from 1942 to 1943 by Don Campbell, Trucker, in Laurel, Iowa.

During WWII, Shorty, being part of the Greatest Generation served our country honorably in the United States Army. He returned to his hometown where he began working for Skelly Gas Station as an attendant. For over 20 years Shorty, was a faithful part of Fisher Controls before he retired in 1988.

On May 1, 1954, he was united in marriage to Ruby Kjormoe. From this union two daughters were born: Cindy and Teresa. Shorty was a proud member of the Laurel Legion. He had a passion for his family, auctioning, buying cars, watching car auctions, NASCAR, garage sales, thrift shops, feeding geese and ducks, and visiting his good friend: Dale Benskin. Shorty also enjoyed a good conversation over a cup of coffee with many other special friends as well.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Cindy (Michael) Hanken and Teresa (Jerry) Tichy; grandchildren: Amy (Chris) Bland, Serena Tichy and Jared Tichy; and one great-grandchild: Presley Bland

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother: Samuel; sister-in- law: Sally; former wife: Ruby and son-in-law Randy.
