Mrs. Alice Jane Burkett, widow of the late David C. Burkett, died at her home in Clearfield Saturday, May 4, 1929, at 4:45 o'clock, the result of a stroke of paralysis suffered the previous Thursday.
The deceased was a daughter of Richard and Nancy Hughes, Long since passed away and who were among the pioneer residents of Decatur Township, Clearfield County. She was born on the old farm home on September 10, 1848, making her age 80 years, 7 months, and 24 days.
On December 24, 1868, she was united in marriage to David C. Burkett, Rev. Thos. H. Switzer of Philipsburg performing the ceremony.
Her husband, who followed farming and merchandising died about eight years ago. The family moved from Woodland to Clearfield about 25 years ago, ever since making that place their home. Upon the death of her daughter on July 23, 1928 Mrs. Burkett went to Jersey Shore to remain with her daughter, Mrs. J. L. Mapes, returning to her home in Clearfield only a few weeks ago.
Besides her daughter, Maude D. Mapes, she is survived by Alice S. Bay, Evelyn S. Wilhelm, Irvine Smith Johnston, and David L. McCullough, all grandchildren; also several great-grandchildren. The following brothers survive, viz: John Hughes and F. F. Hughes of Decatur Township and H. M. Hughes of Philipsburg.
Mrs. Burkett was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a woman of exceptionally beautiful character. Her many pleasing graces endeared her to a large circle of friends who will keenly mourn her passing. Most keenly though will she be missed by those in the home, to whom she devoted her life.
Rev. Reeve of the Presbyterian Church had charge of the services, which were conducted at the home, corner of Fourth and Locust streets, Wednesday at 3 o'clock. Rev. Reeve ws assisted by Rev. N. S. Wilson of Johnstown who was a live-long friend of the family. Rev. Wilson paid many beautiful tributes to Mrs. Burkett, emphasizing especially the influence she has always had in life.
